2006 Digital-Scholarship Use Statistics

Last year brought a number of changes with my resignation from the University of Houston Libraries and a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on the hosting service for my Digital-Scholarship.Com domain.

The former resulted in the Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography being moved from UH servers to Digital-Scholarship.Com in early November, shortly after the publication of the tenth anniversary version of SEPB.

The latter resulted in the establishment of a second domain (Digital-Scholarship.Org), which is now the primary domain, on a different hosting service in mid-December.

Currently, these two domains mirror each other, with the exception of comments being off at the DigitalKoans at Digital-Scholarship.Com.

So, given all this, what were the use statistics? (I use analog for analysis.)

For Digital-Scholarship.Com, there were 1,734,415 successful requests, 4,751 average successful requests per day, 890,555 successful requests for pages, and 2,439 average successful requests for pages per day. (A request is for any type of file; a page request is for a content file, such as an HTML, PDF, or Word file). This activity came from 60,509 distinct hosts. (Use statistics for August and September are partial due to logging problems).

Requests came from 136 Internet domains. Leaving aside an unusual number of unresolved numerical addresses, the top fifteen were .com, .net, .edu, .nl (Netherlands), .uk (United Kingdom), .ch (Switzerland), .ca (Canada), .jp (Japan), .hu (Hungary), .org, .au (Australia), .de (Germany), it (Italy), .fr (France), and .in (India). At the bottom were domains such as .ad (Andorra), .bj (Benin), .bt (Bhutan), .er (Eritrea), and .pa (Panama).

The DigitalKoans directory accounted for 1,338,553 requests (77.18%) and 608,986 pages (68.38%), my publications directory (mainly e-prints) accounted for 162,612 requests (9.38%) and 90,094 pages (10.12%), the Open Access Bibliography: Liberating Scholarly Literature with E-Prints and Open Access Journals directory accounted for 115,192 requests (6.64%) and 86,512 pages (9.71%), and the Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography accounted for 89,058 requests (5.13%) and 83,064 pages (9.33%) (the rest were directories such as the root directory).

Digital-Scholarship.Org statistics were for a partial month (December) and the analysis was done with Webalizer. I won’t go into detail. There were 22,144 requests and 17,627 requests for pages.
