"Integrating Approaches to Privacy Across the Research Lifecycle: Long-Term Longitudinal Studies"

Posted in Data Curation, Open Data, and Research Data Management on August 20th, 2014 by Charles W. Bailey, Jr.

Alexandra Wood et al. have self-archived "Integrating Approaches to Privacy Across the Research Lifecycle: Long-Term Longitudinal Studies."

Here's an excerpt:

The defining characteristics of a long-term longitudinal study—that such a study follows a large number of individuals over extended periods of time and collects vast quantities of sometimes very sensitive personal information from subjects—create a number of challenges for researchers working with longitudinal data. Over the course of a longitudinal study, data collection, uses of data, privacy expectations, and laws may change, leaving the scope of subjects' consent unclear. The use of contractors for data collection and the need to retain administrative data linked to records to recontact subjects over time may increase the risk of disclosure.

"The Development of Open Access Repositories in the Asia-Oceania Region: A Case Study of Three Institutions"

Posted in Digital Repositories, Institutional Repositories, Open Access, Self-Archiving on August 19th, 2014 by Charles W. Bailey, Jr.

IFLA has released "The Development of Open Access Repositories in the Asia-Oceania Region: A Case Study of Three Institutions."

Here's an excerpt:

In recent years, open access models of publishing have transcended traditional modes thus enabling freer access to research. This paper takes a trans-regional approach to examining open access publishing in the Asia and Oceania region focusing on three institutions—Charles Darwin University in Australia, University of Hong Kong, and University of Malaya in Malaysia—reflecting on how each is rising, in its own individual way, to meet the range of challenges that its research communities are facing. Specifically, it focuses on open access and institutional repository development, and traces their development at each of the aforementioned institutions.

eLife Research Advances Allows Authors to Update Their Papers

Posted in Publishing, Scholarly Journals on August 19th, 2014 by Charles W. Bailey, Jr.

eLife has announced Research Advances, which allows authors to update their papers.

Here's an excerpt from the announcement:

The new article format, which we have named Research Advances, is for new results that build on previously published Research Articles or Short Reports in an important way. Authors will therefore be able to report progress in their research programs rapidly and efficiently when it is judged to be a substantial addition to the original work. These contributions might use a new technique or a different experimental design to generate results that strengthen, refine or even challenge the conclusions of the original research paper.

On a historical note, the University of Houston Libraries' e-journal The Public-Access Computer Systems Review began to offer authors the option of updating articles in 1995. For example, the 1995 "The Heinz Electronic Library Interactive Online System (HELIOS): Building a Digital Archive Using Imaging, OCR, and Natural Language Processing Technologies" and the 1998 "The Heinz Electronic Library Interactive Online System (HELIOS): An Update."
