Günter Waibel Named Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director of the California Digital Library

Günter Waibel has been named the Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director of the California Digital Library.

Here's an excerpt from the announcement:

In his current position as the Director of the Digitization Program Office at the Smithsonian Institution, Waibel oversees the strategic plan for creating a digital Smithsonian out of the institution's 19 museums and 9 research centers. . . . Prior to coming to the Smithsonian, Waibel promoted network-based solutions on behalf of an international collaborative of 140 research libraries as Program Officer for the Research Libraries Group and the OCLC Research Library Partnership. Waibel has an MA in English Literature from Georgetown University and taught in the digital library certificate program for Syracuse University’s iSchool from 2003 to 2008.

"Four PLOS Authors Receive 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences"

PLOS has released "Four PLOS Authors Receive 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences."

Here's an excerpt:

This year, four of the five scientists awarded a $3 million Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences chose to publish some of their work in Open Access journals over the course of their careers. In so doing, Edward S. Boyden, Karl Deisseroth, John Hardy and Svante Pääbo ensure their research is available for distribution, discovery and reuse, introducing opportunities for all scientists to build on their discoveries.

Collectively, the four PLOS authors and Breakthrough Prize winners have published 55 articles in PLOS journals: 35 articles in PLOS ONE, nine articles in PLOS Genetics, eight articles in PLOS Biology and three articles in PLOS Computational Biology. They've also rocked out to the tunes of Pharrell Williams in an Oscar-style ceremony.

Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew Confirmed as Director of the IMLS

Dr. Kathryn K. Matthewhas been confirmed as Director of the IMLS.

Here's an excerpt from the announcement:

Trained as a scientist, Dr. Matthew's 30-year museum career began in curatorial, collections management, and research roles at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and Cranbrook Institute of Science. She worked with a variety of collections including ornithology, paleontology, fine arts, and anthropology. She then moved into management, exhibits and educational programs development, and fundraising and marketing roles, working at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, The Nature Conservancy, the Historic Charleston Foundation, and The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. She was also a science advisor for the IMAX film "Tropical Rainforest," produced by the Science Museum of Minnesota.

In addition she was Executive Director of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, a state-funded museum.

Bernard A. Barton Jr. Named CIO of the Librarian of Congress

Bernard A. Barton Jr. has been named the Chief Information Officer of the Librarian of Congress.

Barton most recently served as chief information officer and deputy administrator of the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), the largest central resource for Department of Defense and government-funded research, development, technical and engineering information. . . .

Barton joined DTIC in 2009 as deputy director of Information Technology Services. In 2010, he was named acting director of Information Technology Services and, in 2012, its director. Later that year, Barton was appointed DTIC's deputy administrator and chief information officer.

In that role, Barton managed the daily operations of DTIC; developed institutional strategies; directed the planning and implementation of long-range information-technology initiatives; led the development of unique, state-of-the-art systems and technology applications; established DTIC as the Department of Defense science and technology community "cloud," providing nearly real-time communication and collaboration infrastructure; and implemented Web 2.0 technologies within the institution, providing rapid prototyping of relevant and secure products and early adoption of new or improved technologies.

Early this summer, Robert Choate Darnton, Harvard's Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and University Librarian, will pack up his book-lined office on the second floor of Wadsworth House.

As of June 30, the celebrated historian, digital library pioneer, and champion of books will leave the University he first saw as an undergraduate in 1957. A scholar of Enlightenment France and of the history of the book, he returned to Harvard in 1965 to join the Society of Fellows, decamped to Princeton University in 1968 for 39 years, and came back to Harvard in 2007.

Ann D. Thornton has been named as Columbia University's University Librarian and Vice Provost.

David Walker Wins 2015 LITA/Library Hi Tech Award for Outstanding Communication in Library and Information Technology

David Walker has won the 2015 LITA/Library Hi Tech Award for Outstanding Communication in Library and Information Technology.

Walker is being recognized for his dedication and commitment in developing open source library portal application Xerxes over the past decade. Originally designed as an improved interface to the Ex Libris Metalib federated search system in 2004, Xerxes now supports a variety of back-end search engines, including commercial library discovery systems, such as Primo, EDS, Summon, non-cost web service (EBSCO Integration Toolkit, Worldcat API), and other search engines (Solr, Google Appliance). Through this effort, Walker has worked with a variety of vendors to develop and test their application programming interfaces, and has been recognized by OCLC and Ex Libris for innovative uses of their services. In 2007 Walker released the system under an open source license, and today, Xerxes platform is implemented by over 40 institutions around the globe, with some also contributing code back to the project.

Noted open access advocate Robin Peek has retired from the Simmons GSLIS.

Here's an excerpt from the press release:

"Robin Peek was one of the earliest advocates for open access to research, one of the first to write about it regularly, and one of the first to teach a course about it, which she taught at Simmons." said Dr. Peter Suber, Director of the Harvard Office for Scholarly Communication, the Harvard Open Access Project and co-founder of the Open Access Directory. "She is also the editor and co-founder of the Open Access Directory, a globally recognized encyclopedia of open access hosted by Simmons. The Open Access Directory is unique in that it is hosted and preserved by a library school, open to public contributions, edited for quality, and featured on every major list of essential resources on the topic." The six-year old Open Access Directory, a wiki managed by the OA community that provides reference lists about open access to scientists and scholars and has had more than four million views. Peek will continue to be the editor of the Open Access Directory.

Dana C. Rooks to Step Down as Dean of the University of Houston Libraries

Dana C. Rooks has announced her intention to step down as Dean of the University of Houston Libraries when her successor is appointed.

Here's an excerpt from the announcement:

"Dana has helped shape library services in the state of Texas," [Provost Paula] Short said in the email. "She is recognized as one of the founders of TexShare, an innovative model for statewide library resource sharing. She is also one of the founders of the Texas Digital Library and currently serves as chair of its governing board." . . .

"I am pleased that upon her stepping down, she has agreed to assist me on several new initiatives in a new role in the provost office," Short said in the email.

Among her many accomplishments, Rooks was active in the UH Libraries' pioneering digital publishing program, serving as an associate editor of The Public-Access Computer Systems Review, the first open access journal in the field of library and information science, founding co-editor of Public-Access Computer Systems News, an early electronic newsletter, and moderator of PACS-L, an early LISTSERV mailing list about public-access computers in libraries.
