Budapest Open Access Initiative: The Open Society Institute (OSI) held a meeting on December 1-2 of last year that resulted in the creation of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI). The key section of the BOAI says:

: By "open access" to this literature, we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.

Self-archiving and alternative journals are the two major strategies recommended by the BOAI. An FAQ is available, which is very helpful in understanding the BOAI. Over 350 individuals and 30 organizations have endorsed the BOAI, and others are encouraged to sign the BOAI and commit themselves to its principles. The Open Society Institute has donated one million dollars per year for a three-year period to support open access initiatives.

The roundtable's final report as been published in the December 2001 issue of Policy Perspectives as an essay called "Op. Cit."

"Pricing Newsletter Ceases Publication": Marcia Tuttle posted a message on the Prices list on 1/24/02 that said "the Newsletter on Serials Pricing Issues ceased publication with issue number 257 on August 12, 2001." Established on February 27, 1989, NSPI was one of the first free electronic library publications, and it had a significant impact on the library profession during its long run. Hats off to Marcia Tuttle and company for their pioneering electronic publishing efforts. For more NSPI history, see:
